On the main activities of the first version of the Diploma in Typography, Professor Andre Gürtler presented in a serie of conferences, his vision of contemporary typographic work and its relationship with the “classic” calligraphic tradition. In his lecture “From Writing to Typography” Gürtler recommend to those who are studying typography with the digital tool, which must meet not only the contemporary practice of typography but also the theoretical and historical implications. According Gürtler “… we designed a new typeface with head and hand, but also for the knowledge about the history of writing and experiences in the field. Without that, there is no quality, perfection and beauty – there is only mediocrity or visual chaos … “

He also gave lectures for students where he showed the relationship between the letters drawn by hand gestures with the characters, features and styles that are then serialized for reproduction.
